A Jewish Odyssey Told Through the Lens of Yiddish Music
Join singer and cultural interlocutor Mitchell Smolkin as he takes you on a journey through Yiddish music’s history, exploring its origins, its linguistic heritage, and its impact. Mitchell was involved on an intimate level with Yiddish music’s interface in the Canadian cultural landscape, having been the Artistic Director of the Ashkenaz Festival, one of the largest multidisciplinary Yiddish festivals in the world that takes place in Toronto, throughout the early 2000s. Now based in Europe, and as part of his roles as curator and performer, he has had the opportunity to witness Yiddish music’s impact on four different continents. For this performance lecture, Mitchell will be joined by the very talented Jerry Abdo on accordion.
