Talking Torah: Parashat Bo: Unity in Diversity
Join us in discussing Parshat Hashavua with Rebecca Lillian, our new rabbi.
In Parshat Bo, we learn that when the enslaved Israelites fled Egypt, they were accompanied by” a mixed multitude who went up with them.” (Shemot/2nd Moses book 12:38) What is a mixed multitude? Rashi, the great medieval commentator, tells us that it is a mixture of converts of different nationalities. Throughout history, other commentators have offered varied ideas. The text is clear, though: from the start, Jewish people have always lived and worked side-by-side with non-Jews.
In today’s interconnected, globalised, yet increasingly nationalistic world, what can we learn from Parashat Bo about how to create unity in diversity?
Discussion will be a combination of English and Swedish
(Read this Torah portion, Exodus 10:1 – 13:16 on Sefaria in Hebrew or English, or read it in Swedish from any Torah translation)
